We are an approved and recognised centre for the delivery of the SQA Scottish Vocational Qualification Level 3 PDA/SVQ in Dental Nursing.

 

Achievement of this qualification will allow registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) as a Dental Nurse.

What areas of Scotland do you Cover?

  • We invite applications from Candidates living in Strathclyde/Greater Glasgow, Edinburgh & Lothian, Ayrshire, Perthshire, Stirling, Dundee, Aberdeen, Fyfe and Dumfries & Galloway.  (Anyone living outwith these regions is also invited to enquire as to course availability).
     

What are the Entry Requirements for the Course?

  • The Candidate must be employed within a dental practice as a Trainee.  (Candidates not currently working in a practice are welcome to enquire for advice).

and

  • Candidates must be educated to Standard Grade or equivalent level, ideally in at least four subjects including English. (Candidates without these qualifications are welcome to enquire for advice).

What does the Course Cost?

  • The Course is FREE to candidates who start aged under 25.  (Anyone wishing to embark on the course aged 25 or over should enquire for advice on financial assistance).

How Long does the Course take to Complete?

  • 12 months (minimum time required) to 24 months (can be extended).

  • Pace of coursework is flexibile.

Is it possible to work and earn a wage during the Course?

  • Yes - as long as employment is as a Trainee in a dental practice.

What does the Course Consist of?

  • Stage 1(8 to 12 months) :- Building a Portfolio of Evidence - which involves Tutorials, completion of Workbooks and Observation by your Assessor in the Surgery.  Stage 2 (4 to 6 months) :- Weekly Classes and a final Written Exam.  Have a look at the course details here.

What kind of Support do we offer?

  • Our experienced team will provide support and guidance through to qualification with a tailored training plan that suits both the Trainee and the Practice.  The Trainee will have an Assigned Assessor, who will support and assist as the Trainee progresses through the course and builds a portfolio of evidence.  This offers the Trainee flexibility whilst working and gaining experience in the surgery.  Assessments and monitoring visits are carried out every 6-8 weeks, with minimum disruption to the workplace.

 

What kind of Help is Available?

  • A helpline is available for the Trainee and/or Dentist/Practice Manager to discuss any matters - Monday to Friday 9.00am-5.00pm (Tuesdays 'til 8.30pm).

  • The Trainee will also be able to discuss her/his progress and participate in a one to one tutorial at a convenient time.

 

What is the Progression from Dental Nursing?

  • Attainment of the SVQ in Dental Nursing will facilitate professional development through to Dental Hygienist, Hygiene Therapist, Dental Technician and Practice Management.
